Th e stated aim of Locke’s book is to show that Anglicanism does not have a confused ecclesiology, contrary to the opinion of many, but rather a ‘a fi rmer ecclesiological foundation than is often supposed’ (p. ix). Th e opening two chapters argue that Anglican ecclesiology is generally Protestant in character, being based on the three notae of the Church: word, sacrament and discipline. Although the Church of England maintained the episcopate at the Reformation it was as a practical adjunct for maintaining the discipline of the Church not as something concerning the esse of the Church.
