By titling his book Th e Gospel of rather than Th e Gospel about Jesus James Robinson sig- nals that he writes, not to off er another study on the historical Jesus, but to present his reconstruction of Jesus’ message to a contemporary readership. Th e ‘human dilemma’, Robinson contends, is the array of wants and trials that in every age confront all members of the race. Whereas institutions and individuals have typically solved that dilemma ‘for themselves at the expense of everyone else’ (p. xiii), Jesus preached a faith in God for one’s own needs and a ministry under God for the needs of others. Since this human dilemma ‘is still our dilemma’ (p. xiii), Robinson wants to insure that Jesus’ solution can still be our solution; and with this in view he writes to give that solution a new hearing.
