What Are Th ey Saying About the Historical Jesus? (Mahwah, NJ: Paulist, 2007), pb, x + 190 pp. ISBN 9780809144457. $14.95. Th is book is a survey of scholarship on the historical Jesus. In the interest of brevity, Gowler reluctantly focuses on ‘a small number of important works’ (p. ix), given the sheer volume of historical Jesus studies. Still, he aims to convey the diversity and breadth of the fi eld, and to reappraise some of its presuppositions and methods. Th e fi rst chapter briefl y summarizes the ‘Modern Quest’, beginning with the work of Reimarus and Strauss. It also introduces seminal Quest questions, such as the 4-source theory, synoptic disagreement, and rationalist interpretation. Gowler moves quickly through the Liberal Quest, including Renan, Ritschl and Harnack, and its collapse under the weight of Wrede, Schweitzer, and Bultmann. Chapter 2 deals with the ‘New Quest’, and the work of Bultmann’s students, Kasemann, Fuchs, Bornkamm, as well as Conzelmann and James Robinson, and their historical (not existen- tial) determinations http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus Brill
