The Ayatollah Begs to Differ: The Paradox of Modern Iran

The Ayatollah Begs to Differ: The Paradox of Modern Iran Book Reviews / Iran and the Caucasus 13 (2009) 225-226 225 Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2009 DOI: 10.1163/160984909X12476379008520 Hooman Majd, The Ayatollah Begs to Differ: The Paradox of Modern Iran, New York: “Doubleday”, 2008, 273 pp. Hooman Majd, an Iranian-American journalist whose pieces on Iran have appeared in GQ , The New Yorker, The New York Times , and The New York Observer , has written an elegant book for Westerners who desire a better understanding of Iranians and contemporary Iran. Majd is uniquely qualified to write such a work: he was born in Iran, a son of a diplomat, a grandson of a high-ranking Iranian Ayatollah; educated in the UK and the United States; fluent in both Persian and English. Since Iranian culture is complex for Americans, Majd untangles some of its basic concepts with hope that the readers can better appreciate Irani- ans. Divided into nine chapters with small interconnecting anecdotes, the work offers an insider’s view of Iran. Majd begins, in a very Iranian manner (somewhat round about, non- confrontational), to provide his qualifications for writing the work and his reasons behind its necessity. In the introduction, he mentions his support for the Islamic Revolution http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Iran and the Caucasus Brill
