Book Reviews/Boekresensies 343 Book Reviews/Boekresensies Bailey, R (ed) 1992. Hermeneutics for preaching: approaches to contemporary interpretations of Scripture. Nashville: Broadman Press. 223 pp. This volume contains eight chapters: an introduction explaining the concept hermeneutics and seven expositions of different models for 'interpreting and preaching the biblical text'. Each model is presented in similar format: introduction, elucidation of theoretical aspects of the model, explanation of a technique (how the particular model can be applied), an illustrative sennon and a conclusion. Each chapter has a full set of notes and references, and a final general bibliography is added so that the reader can follow up on information provided. The first chapter, entitled 'Hermeneutics: a necessary art' is disappointing. Even when allowing that Bailey needs to deal with complex issues very briefly to fit an overview of the history of henneneutics into a single chapter, his summaries are misleading and contain several misconceptions. For instance, he writes that 'Bultmann used the method of form criticism to strip away the cultural accretions' (:19). There is very little of use in this introduction, if one is looking for a reliable description of the problems of hermeneutics. The seven chapters following the introduction present in turn http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Religion and Theology Brill
