Abstract

Despite logical-positivism’s negative reputation in philosophy of religion, it has correctly left analytic philosophy with the insight that the question of meaning epistemologically precedes the question of truth. In Wittgensteinian philosophy of religion in particular, it is more important to seek to understand and elucidate concepts than to argue for the truth or falsity of a theological proposition, religious truth-claim or a personal belief. Coming from this latter descriptive line of thought, Hugo Strandberg seeks to assist the implied reader in contemplating the possibility of a different way of doing philosophy of religion via reconsidering what it means to say that God is a god of love. According to Strandberg, philosophy of religion has traditionally been understood along more or less epistemological lines. By contrast, in this book the moral concept of love is presented as being central in belief. This is taken to imply that we have to rethink the way we do philosophy of religion, no longer being able to separate the formalist distinction between the “what” and the ‘how” of belief.
