Six Decades in an Eminent International Lawyer’s Life Laudatio in Honour of Professor Karl Zemanek Symposium ‘International Law, Values and the Use of Force’ Symposium to Celebrate the 80th Birthday of Karl Zemanek Six Decades in an Eminent International Lawyer’s Life Laudatio in Honour of Professor Karl Zemanek Lilly Sucharipa Excellencies, Secretary General, Dear colleagues, Friends of Karl Zemanek, Ladies and Gentlemen, We gathered here today on the invitation of the Diplomatic Academy to celebrate Professor Karl Zemanek’s 80th birthday with a symposium of international law. As it is customary at an occasion like this, let me recall certain milestones in the life of Karl Zemanek. Born on 18 November 1929, he spent his childhood and early youth in times of turmoil: the totalitarian regime of Austrofascism, the Anschluss to Nazi Germany and the horrors of World War II. After the war he studied law at the University of Vienna and received his doctor iuris degree in 1952. After a period as research assistant in Saarbrü- cken he moved back to Vienna and received his venia legendi in 1957 with his thesis on ‘The Law of Treaties of International Organizations’.
