The religious phenomenon on which we want to focus attention is John Wes- ley's unique awareness of vocation as it finds expression in his use of the biblical sentence "a brand snatched out of the fire". It has been and it is still very com- mon among Methodist preachers and writers to refer to these words as typical of Wesley's opinion of himself. Usually scholars have connected the words with Wesley's rescue from the rectory fire at Epworth, when he was six years old.
