I FROM THE EDITOR The Series "Iran & Cvucvsus ?' of the Caucasian Centre for Iranian Studies (CCIS) was conceived as an International Publication. The Se- ries invites scholarly materials from oll Orientvlists, but especially - from those of the CIS and in particular, Caucasus and the Central Asian Re- publics, working in the various fields of Oriental Studies - History, Social Anthropology, Religion, Philology, Political Sciences, etc. The Series of the Caucasian Centre for Iranian Studies is a purely academic initiative aimed at the reconstruction of partially severed ties: joining the scientific potential of a once single area, and - what is very important - introducing to a wide international audience, the latest re- search of CIS scholars, evidence of their permanent work and adher- ence to old academic traditions preserved despite the collapse of the Soviet State. The work on the Series was started soon after the foundation of the Caucasian Centre for Iranian Studies in December 1996. It was the first experience of that kind in the framework of this academic institu- tion. However, a year later, i. e, by the time of compiling of the 1st Vol- ume, the Centre had already published a
