Farhang-e vāžegān-e Tabarī (A Dictionary of Tabari), in 5 volumes, edited by Jahāngīr-e Nasrī-Ašrafī  Brill, Leiden, 2006 Iran and the Caucasus, 10.2 REVIEWS Farhang-e vāžegān-e Tabarī [A Dictionary of Tabari] , in 5 volumes, edited by Jahāngīr-e Naṣrī-Ašrafī, Tehran: “Eḥyā’-ketāb”: 1381/2002, 2882 pp. This voluminous publication is prepared by a group of authors, mostly native pundits from the South-Caspian provinces of Iran― Mazandaran, Gilan, and Golestan (Gorgan). It is in fact a comparative glossary containing lexical units from almost all major urban and ru- ral centres of the region. The materials from Gilan and other Caspian provinces were used as illustrative parallels to the Mazandarani re- spective cognates. The word-list is arranged in the alphabetical or- der of Persian, with Latin transcription following each head-word. The glossary itself fills only four volumes (pp. 1-2113), the forth one including also a Persian-Mazandarani index (pp. 2117-2304), and a Sachregister (pp. 2307-2330). The fifth volume (pp. 2335-2592) is a collection of mostly lexicological and etymological notes, historical and ethnographic essays, comments on different toponyms and geo- graphical terms, etc. presented by various scholars. The major part of this volume (pp. 2593-2873) occupies the grammar of Mazanda- rani, describing predominantly the verbal system of this language.
