5 IX IAMS INTERNATIONAL MISSION STUDIES CONFERENCE Buenos Aires, April 10-19,1996 God or Mammon: Economies in Conflict The theme of "God or mammon: economies in conffict" opens up a range of questions and concerns. We wish to take seriously the Latin American and Argentinean struggle with these issues in their history and contemporary experience. We acknowledge, at the same time as we question, the power of world economic systems and the assumptions and values they take for granted. We remember the Scripture "One cannot serve God and mammon" and note the strong biblical themes relating to Christ's authority over "prin- cipalities and powers," the call to stewardship, the place of the poor in the purposes of God and the mission of the Church, and the ways in which the bible contains a message for the rich and a Gospel for all. ' We acknowledge the long tradition of Christian reflection on the econ- omies of finance and industry as on God's economy of salvation. In building on that tradition we wish to learn from and contribute to discussions of these themes with those of good will and of other faiths. These issues will be explored through prayer and worship,
