Pobee CHURCHES BETWEEN NATIONALISTIC ENDEAVOR AND ECUMENICAL DEMAND Ideology Let me begin with a comment or two on some key words either directly mentioned in the assigned topic or implied. Nationalism is an ideology. So let me begin with ideology which is not mentioned di- rectly in the topic. For many people ideology is a bad word because it is not infrequently understood as "a set of dogmas to be imposed by the government, with force, if necessary." That negative attitude was contributed to particularly by the unfortunate oppressive system dur- ing the time of Stalin in the name of Marxist socialism. However, oppression has not been the preserve of some peoples and is not necessarily a part of ideology. Apartheid in South Africa, colonialism that has been practiced by Britain, Germany, France, Belgium, Portugal and Spain, have been ideologies. Such concepts as welfare-state, Chris- tendom, national security etc. etc. etc. are all ideologies. In this presen- tation I use the word ideology in its proper and original sense: "blue- prints of the future made by certain ideologues or groups of elite within the community to move the masses."'
