IS CHRIST THE ONLY WAY TO SALVATION? A Study Conference in Sankt Augustin 234 Karl Müller SVD IS CHRIST THE ONLY WAY TO SALVATION? A Study Conference in Sankt Augustin From June 5th to 9th, 1990, the Theological College and the Missiological Institute of the Divine Word Missionaries in Sankt Augustin near Bonn, West Germany, jointly sponsored a mission study week concerning the important question of Christ and the salvation of humanity. Formulated in the rather dramatic form: "Is Christ the Only Way?", the question entered the public debate subsequent to the meeting in Singapore 1987 of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC) and the Christian Conference of Asia (CCA) which dealt with the dialogue of Christianity with non-Christian religions. At that time the German magazine Publik-Forum (17, 1988, 29f) in a report on the conference stated pointedly: "The latter attitude of fundamental equality (of all religions) in the spirit of dialogue is only possible if the operation of the Holy Spirit in all religions and at the same time the transience of all religions - which are always only ways to salvation, never salvation itself - is presupposed." The response to the invitations to the study week was surprisingly positive.
