Mission Studies Bibliography 118 MISSION STUDIES BIBLIOGRAPHY Karl-Johan Lundström, The Lotuho and the Verona Fathers. A Case Study of Communication in Development, Uppsala 1990, pp. 272. (Studia Missionalia Upsaliensia No. 51) Development work often involves an encounter between the insiders of a society and outsiders who wish to assist them. Communication between these two groups has usually been studied in order to improve the persuasive power of the outsider. The aim of the study under review has been to investigate the role communication has played in a process of change which was brought about by the introduction of innovations by outsiders, but where the role of the insider also proved to be far-reaching. The change in question was a religious one, brought to the Lotuho of Southern Sudan by the Verona Fathers. The period of direct encounter began in 1920 when the mission started at the Torit Center of Lotuho and lasted until 1964 when the missionaries were expelled by the Sudanese government. The period of the study is, however, chronologically wider. It begins about 1850, continuing until 1982. _ Part I (Development, Cultural Change and Communication, pp. 15-47) introduces the practical and theoretical outline and framework of the study.
