30 Christian Evangelism in Nigeria: A Blueprint for the Future CHRISTOPHER I. EJIZU I. Defining the Focus: The passing millenium has largely been a period of 'bumper' harvest in Christian missionary evangelism in Nigeria. Out of an estimated total population of eighty (80) million, forty-nine per cent (49%) or thirty-five (35) million are professing Christians. (Some forty-five per cent (45%) or thirty-three (33) million are Muslims, and a little over four (4) million or 5.6% are traditional religionists) (1). Christianity, therefore, although comparatively a late arrival on the scene, has been able to achieve phenom- enal success over the other two major religions of the country. The profile includes huge congregations of adherents for the different Christian groups, fairly established organisational structures, viable institutions and sizeable volume of resources especially in terms of trained personnel and indigenised clergy. The times appear to have been particularly propitious for the fast growth and develop- ment of Christianity this time around (2). Christian missionary agents had embarked on their recent and successful evangelical campaigns in the wake of resurgent European activities of the eighteenth 'and nineteenth centuries on the Atlantic sea-board of the West Coast of Africa.
