57 First Colloquium of African and European Theologians, Yaoundé - Cameroon, 4-11 April, 1984 - General Report JEAN MARC ELA/STUART E. BROWN, Cameroon-Canada The first meeting of African and European theologians took place in Yaound6 from 4 to 11 April, 1984. This gathering, result of months of preparation, was the realisation of an EAAT initiative of long standing; indeed the EAAT (= Ecumenical Association of African Theo- logians) had included such a meeting in its programme as early as 1980, and it was the EAAT's Executive Committee which set the conference's theme and programme, with the help of the Lyon Group and WCC represen- tatives. Eighty participants from twenty-four countries in Africa, Europe and America took part in the work of the conference. Several confes- sional families were represented: Roman Catholic, Anglican, Oriental, Orthodox and various branches of Protestantism. Many professors came, from such European universities as Leyden, Louvain, Lyon, Paris, Rome and Berlin, as well as from missionary institutes in France, Germany and the Netherlands. The World Council of Churches played a most important role both in the organisation of the colloquium and in its operations.
