The Spirit in the World: Emerging Pentecostal Theologies in Global Contexts . Edited by... The rapid growth of global Pentecostalism has brought the spotlight on the issues of Pentecostal origins, missions, and contextualization. The essays in The Spirit in the World come from an international symposium held in 2006 at the University of Southern California addressing pneumatology in global contexts. The editor of the book, Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen, is professor of systematic theology at Fuller Theological Seminary and has written on pneumatology and theology of religions. The Spirit in the World is divided into three primary sections. The first deals with Pentecostal theology and spiritual (em)power(ment). Pentecostals believe that baptism in the Holy Spirit provides empowerment for mission and the experiences of healing and transformation. Frank Macchia argues that baptism in the Holy Spirit is a Pentecostal distinctive. This distinctive provides healing and transformation in physical bodies as well as in social systems as Margaret Poloma and Douglas Peterson consider in their respective chapters. The second section relates Pentecostal theology with cultural diversity. The common Western Pentecostal narrative is that the movement began at Azusa Street, Los Angeles, in 1906 when William Seymour preached emphasizing baptism in the Spirit as evidenced by speaking in tongues or glossolalia. Abstract
