Th is volume in a series of the Max Kade German-American Research Institute was pub- lished in 1995 in Germany as Herrnhuter Indianermission in der Amerikanischen Revolution: Die Tagebücher von David Zeisberger, 1772 bis 1781. It presents the Moravian missionary David Zeisberger (1721–1808), born in the Carpatian region of Middle Europe, who arrived in Ohio at the time of the US Revolutionary War. Th e Moravians had carried out unsuccessful missionary work northeast of Fort Pitt between 1768 and 1771, and then moved to the upper Muskingum River valley region. Th e diaries of Zeisberger of 1772– 1781 are a detailed story of this eff ort. Th e Moravian church or Unitas Fratrum , guided in the 18th century by Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf, was busy formulating a missiology after early experiences in the Caribbean (the Danish Islands) from 1732 and in Suriname from 1735.
