Even before one reads the text, Hart McNichols’ stunning icons capture the reader’s imagi- nation and form a parallel “reading” of John Dear’s insights in You Will Be My Witnesses. Th e book off ers two types of refl ection on the “Risen Christ alive” in thirty-one martyrs, prophets, and saints, either offi cially or popularly acclaimed, all considered those who “speak the truth about God” (viii). Truths highlighted center on compassion, justice, and peace, which are familiar themes in Dear’s popular books and lectures. Th e icon itself is a further witness, linking the visible and invisible worlds in the tradition of Eastern Christi- anity. Well-known witnesses are included, such as the Virgin Mary (in two diff erent repre- sentations), Th érèse of Lisieux, and Ignatius Loyola.
