Maryknoll, New York, USA, Orbis Books 2007. Pp. xix + 234. $19.00. Women in Mission is the latest book in the American Society of Missiology Series. Its author, Susan E. Smith, is a member of the Catholic Congregation of Our Lady of the Missions and a native of New Zealand. She has also lived and worked in Bangladesh, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and Ethiopia. Smith is lecturer emerita in theology at the University of Auckland and served on the executive committee of the International Association for Mission Studies. As the title indicates, Smith provides a concise overview of women’s involvement in the expansion of Christianity from the New Testament, including the apocryphal gospels, through the early church to Vatican II, and then gives consideration to today’s postmodern era. She highlights specifi c women and missionary movements in each of the eras, bringing into focus particular individuals and groups against the broad sweep of the backdrop of history.
