Th e author of several books on Jesuit missions in the New World, Cushner here takes a broader look at the subject, comparing and contrasting Jesuit missions across North and South America, and contextualizing the success and failure of these enterprises in terms of missionary training, compatibility of the Christian worldview with that of local religions, relations with colonial governments, and other criteria. Th e result is a compact and infor- mative book that lends an appreciation to the diversity of the missionary-native dialogue in the New World. First and foremost, however, this is a book about Jesuits, looking at them as agents of change and asking why they did what they did.
