The Goodness of the Good News

The Goodness of the Good News Editorial Note The Goodness of the Good News In a conversation with a good Hindu friend, I tried to convey what I believe to be the greatness of Christian mission, namely the act of shar- ing the universal “good news”. My e ff ort to impress upon him the “real beauty” of mission behind the veil of colonial arrogance was futile when he insisted on the immorality of missionary imperialism in history. I won- dered if the good news has good fl avor in his mouth. Although we never come to the point of discussing what constitutes the good news, I later realized that was the point where we missed each other. With his con- viction of the bitter taste of Christian missionary practice, he had very little to say about the goodness of Christianity, or the goodness of what Christians proclaim to be the good news. He knew the word “evange- lism” which I tried to explain to him as etymologically related to the good news or gospel. To him, the term evangelism has to do with aggres- sive religious propaganda which had its source in a very arrogant and self-aggrandizing Christian self-understanding.
