Kritische Edition mit Anmerkungen und kommentierter Übersetzung (Drama und Theater in Südasien 10), Wiesbaden: Harrassowitz Verlag, 2010, X + 190 pp. ISBN 978 3 447 06294 7. €48.00 / sFr 83.00 Anna Aurelia Esposito’s painstaking edition and translation of the Dūtavākya , one of the thirteen “Trivandrum plays” attributed to Bhāsa, is a “stark überarbeitete und ergänzte Version” (p. ix) of her 1997 master’s thesis from Tübingen. It presents an important addition to the corpus of text and performance studies of the Trivandrum plays by Esposito and her teacher Heidrun Brückner, including the former’s doctoral dissertation, a critical edition of the Cārudatta published in 2004. In compiling her edition, Esposito had at her disposal twenty-one manuscripts of the Dūtavākya , all in Malayalam script, most of them complete or nearly so. These manuscripts have revealed a wealth of new readings and variants which were not available from the original editions published in 1912 and 1925 by T.
