Joseph Quayesi-Amakye is a member of the Church of Pentecost ( cop ), the biggest Pentecostal church in Ghana. Quayesi was even born and raised in this church. He is, of course, an insider, but he tries to be objective. His study at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam and the quotations of many scholars count for his openness and his wide interest. An important resource person is the current chairman of the cop -Apostle Dr. Opoku Onyinah. The cop has been spread to many other countries and even to the Netherlands. The cover page shows an illustration of a Christian anchored cross and Akan adinkra symbols. It conveys ‘freedom and victory in Christ which results in transformation in the midst of evil and suffering’. A distinction is made between the ‘institutional churches’ and the ‘peripheral churches’. The first type of churches has a ‘top down’-theology, while the second type has a ‘from below’-theology and is akin to the New Prophetic Churches.
