The Union of Three Indonesian Churches

The Union of Three Indonesian Churches THE UNION OF THREE INDONESIAN CHURCHES Chris Hartono In the modern ecumenical movement the union of churches is still a rare, but always a very enchanting event. The union of three Protestant churches of West, Central and East Java in 1988 was a very meaningful process, taking into consideration the many differences between these churches, besides their affinity. It took about fifty years to reach this union, which has to be seen as a very long period. In the following we will discuss the process of church union of the three churches, which are now labelled as Gereja Kristen Indonesia (GKI, Indonesian Christian Church). We first will elaborate on the identity of the three distinct churches, then on the process of union and finally on the meaning of this procedure for the broader ecumenical movement in Indo- nesia. In the first section we will describe the ecclesiastical and ethnic background of the three churches, stressing their similarities and differ- ences. In the second section we will go deeper into the process of union, especially for the successful period 1954-1988 and we will also relate some less effective endeavour before that time. In the third section we will discuss http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Exchange Brill
