Abstract

383 Swahili instead of vernacular languages. Kimambo's s contribution on (Lutheran) Christianity among the Zaramo notes in passing that in the beginning of this century, "the use of Swahili as a means of communicat- ing the Christian message removed the power of translation and associated the mission with Islam and the Swahili towns of the coast". But "more recently, the vernacular has lost currency, and attempts to translate some books of the Bible produced negative results, because people saw this as a step backward and were not willing to read them" (p. 68f.). At some point between these two observations a radical change must have taken place in the Zaramo's appreciation of the emergent national language. Despite the great consequences this transition had for the outlook of Christianity, it has not been thematised in this book. Still, it is a fascinating book, in which anyone concerned with East African Christianity or non-Western church history will find a much of interest.-Marc de Mey Book Reviews Roman Malek (ed.), Western Learning and Christianity in China.
