Abstract

284 Paik's book is not only interesting for those interested in Korea and its turbulent history. It is also important for those who are dealing with hermeneutical processes of interpretation, translation and transmission of the biblical message to hearers in their context. But here we also meet the weaker points of the book. Paik takes hermeneutic as a rational and planned process. This may be partly true, as far as transmitters of the biblical message have to be conscious about their own situation and the condition of their addressees. But in this process we meet many factors which are very difficult to control and to handle. Many aspects of this process are invisible and cannot be steered by the hemeneutical specialist. The process may even become open and autonomous, and therefore unpredictable. This makes the hermeneutical operation rather difficult to manage, but surely very fascinating !- - Christine Oosterom, Rijswijk: The Netherlands Edmund Davis, Theological Education in a Multi-Ethnic Society.
