This chapter contains a brief section on philo- sophy and a huge one on the expanding field of 'Missionswissenschaft' (from linguistics and history to psychology and economics the area of the arts, architecture and music is less well represented in 'Missionswissen- schaft') and is by far the most voluminous part of the book (part II will contain the even larger mission theological section of the "branches". The study of mission in the West, particularly in Europe, has usually been part of the wider discourse of the university or the theological semi- nary. The reason for this was not just the struggle of the missionary mo- vement for recognition by the world of learning. 'Mission Studies' as a fundamentally dialogical programme, committed to faith and in need of and answerable to the wider intellectual debate, placed the acknowledge- ment of the world-wide activity of the philanthropy of God in Jesus Christ right in the middle of the academic discourse, challenging thus the concept of 'Wissenschaft', and being challenged in return by the scholarly dis- cussion.
