Whereas confessional theology seems to be withering away, the lost ground is eagerly reclaimed by the expanding philosophy of religion, addressing the never fading interest in Weltanschauung issues. Adriaanse acknowledges the legitimacy and vitality of this interest, but engages in a multifaceted campaign, not only against theistic attempts to revive the old onto-theology, but also against those who try to conceptualize a theodicy that is free from the ontological trappings of the Greek tradition. The title of the book, as well as that of most of the 16 articles, which he has grouped in 4 sections, are carefully and sensibly chosen. They convey the basic conviction that the secularist exit is the outcome of christianity itself, and yet is not without religious issue. Accepting the irreversible break- down of natural theology and of the 'sacred canopy' (Berger), to the extent of even denying the ongoing influence of religion in the arts, he is still resolute that transcendence (as a verb) is a key notion to understand even such facts as deconstructive thought, and that 'yes' and 'no' http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Exchange Brill
