STANDING UP FOR JESUS: A survey of new developments in Christianity in Ghana STANDING UP FOR JESUS: A survey o f new developments in Christianity in Ghana Gerrie ter Haar The proliferation of religious trends makes Ghana a gold-mine for any student of religion, or any religious believer for that matter. This particularly applies to the Christian churches, whose bewildering variety leaves a wide range of choice to individual believers. Where in the past Christistanity was largely monopolised by the former mission churches, today there are churches of various types, old and new. The older ones include traditional 'mainline' churches such as the Roman Catholics, the Anglicans, the Methodists, and the Presbyterians. Although this use of the term 'mainline' is quite frequent, it is not without its problems, as perhaps all labelling is. Other churches known as the 'old' pentecostal churches, such as the Assemblies of God or the Church of Pentecost, have a wide membership both inside and outside Ghana and have impressive missionary records, and could therefore make a reasonable claim to be included in the category of 'mainline' churches.
