Steenbrink Conversion is not a new phenomenon in Indonesian history. This part o f South- east Asia at least experienced three major changes in religion. About 400 the first traces o f the great Indian religious traditions arrived in the archipelago, about 1200 the first sultanates accepted the Muslim faith, while the first Christian communities were founded in the 15th century. Are there similarities in the process o f conversion? This article investigates the role o f foreign and local factors in people's acceptance o f Christianity. Recent studies underline the role o f the indigenous in this process. This corresponds to the debate about the coming o f Hinduism and Islam in the archipelago.
