In his latest book, Introduction to Theology in Global Perspective , Stephen Bevans begins with that question. One common introductory approach offers a basic overview of the content of theology through a survey of the central doctrines and their history in the church. This approach tends to treat theology as an abstract, received tradition. Bevans’ contrasting introductory approach, on the other hand, treats theology as ‘a work in progress’ continually being shaped and reshaped. He does this, in large part, because he is interested in exploring the different ways of doing theology in the diverse contexts of the church in the 21st century. As part of the ‘Theology in Global Perspectives’ series (edited by Peter C.
