On the 15th of December 2003 the Korean theologian Ig-Yin Kim (b. 1946) suc- cessfully defended his thesis History and Theology of Korean Pentecostalism: Sunbogeum (Pure Gospel) Pentecostalism at the University of Utrecht. Kim starts his book with an introduction to the history of Korea and of its religions. In this introduction he gives a survey of the traditional religions of Korea, including Shamanism, and of Korea’s main religions being Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. At the end of his description of Shamanism and of Confucianism he declares that these religions prepared the minds of the Koreans for the com- ing of Christianity. Then he gives an overview of the history of Christianity in Korea since the arrival of the Roman Catholics in 1794. The Roman Catholics were confronted with fi erce persecutions. So, when the Protestants came in 1884, they introduced their belief in a more indirect way.
