Johannes De Turrecremata, Two Questions On Law JOHANNES DE TURRECREMATA, TWO QUESTIONS ON LAW by THOMAS M. IZBICKI (Berkeley) The Dominican cardinal Johannes de Turrecremata (1388-1468) was the foremost papal apologist of the conciliar epoch. In the course of a long career, he also earned a considerable reputation as a theologian and canon lawyer. In subsequent centuries writers in both disciplines invoked his name to lend weight to their argumentsl. Turrecremata did not easily master the science of canon law. He was trained as a Thomist theologian at the Dominican convent in Paris. Turrecremata only turned to law when he began his fight to curb the excesses of the Council of Basel. His polemics from that period contain numerous legal citations. How- ever, this method of argument was not sufficient for the needs of the time. Turrecremata realized that conciliarism had strong roots in canon law, part- icularly in the idea that the Church was a corporation able to punish the mis- deeds of its rector, the pope. Thus he decided to carry the war into the enemy camp by composing his own commentary on Gratian's Decretum.
