Abstract

THE TREE OF BATTLES AND SOME OF ITS SOURCES. 1) by G. W. COOPLAND (LIVERPOOL). Some consideration of the known facts in the life 2) of the author is a necessary preliminary to examination of the sources and purpose of the Tree of Battles, more especially as Honor6 Bonet is famous, rather than well known, even in the country of his origin, and because his work, as we believe, derives its peculiar colour and value from the life and experience, rather than from the learning of its writer. He was born in Provence in the early forties of the 14th cen- tury 3) and may have been reared and educated in the Kingdom of France. In 1368 he made the journey to Rome. In 1382 he was a priest, a professed monk of the Abbey of L'Isle Barbare 1) The substance of this article was communicated to the Ye Congres des Sciences Historiques, Brussels, April, 1923. (Section VII, subsection 2, Droit medieval et moderne). It forms part of the general introduction to an anno- tated English translation of 1'Arbre des Batailles which is in preparation. 1) For Bonet's life etc., see Paulin Paris, Les Manuscrits Fran?ois de la
