P. Wormald, Legal Culture in the Early Medieval West: Law as Text, Image and Experience. The... 584 COMPTES RENDUS D. H OLWERDA , Exempla philologica , Vier Aufsätze. Chimaira, Groningen, 2000. VIII + 53 p. Few people have a sufficient command of both philology and law to be able to con- tribute something of lasting value to the study of textual criticism on legal texts. One of these is D. Holwerda, emeritus professor of Greek in the University of Groningen, and known to legal historians as one of the editors of the seventeen volumes of Basilica cum scholiis . His main interest has always been with literary and theological texts, but his encounters with Themis have given rise to valuable observations, too. His 80th birthday has been celebrated with a slim volume containing a reprint of four papers, which, to the judgement of their editors, are good illustrations of the philological craftsmanship of their author. Three of these deal with legal texts: Le Code Justinien et sa traduction grecque, La mise en page du texte du Code et de sa traduction κ ÆôJ ðüäÆò (1962); Fehler im Authenticum (originally in Dutch [‘Fouten in het Authenticum’], 1971, transl. S.L. Radt); Rührt der Text von PSI 1350 von Dorotheos her? (1992). The fourth paper lies outside the normal range of interest of the readership of this journal, but has been influential among students of ancient Greek theater: Zur szenisch-technischen Bedeutung des Wortes ‘Õ—ˇ¨¯ÓÉÓ anlässlich einer Bemerkung des Aristophanes von Byzanz zu Eur. Hipp. 171 (1976). An index of passages which have been dealt with in greater detail concludes the volume. Groningen Bernard H. Stolte P. Les études anglo-saxonnes (dans le sens historique de cette expression!), et en particulier l’histoire du droit de l’époque anglo-saxonne, ont traditionnellement joué un rôle critique dans l’historiographie de l’ “archipel britannique”. Depuis plusieurs années, P. Wormald a fortement contribué à un nouvel essor de cette épopée historiographique. On se réjouira donc que la Hambledon Press ait publié en un recueil plusieurs études de cet auteur consacrées, essentiellement, aux développements du droit en Angleterre avant la conquête normande. Ces études portent tant sur des questions d’histoire externe que sur la pratique et le contexte politique de l’ancien droit anglo-saxon.
