INTRODUCTION One central concern of victim protection in criminal proceedings legislation is that victims of criminal offences achieve personal and material satisfaction in a simple and quick manner and are spared complicated, lengthy and possibly re-traumatising procedures and legal proceedings. Discussions about possible solutions focus primarily on personal compensation procedures between victim and offender, aiming at a settlement of the conflict created by the criminal offence (called “settlement, mediation of conflict” hereafter), and at the integration of measures to obtain material repair and compensation of the damage (also called “restoration” hereafter) into criminal proceedings.
