Printed in the Netherlands BOOK REVIEWS Human Rights and the Deprived Kanta Rehman (New Delhi, Commonwealth Publishers, 2002) Review by Laura Griffin ∗ Human Rights and the Deprived is an account of the conditions endured by slum-dwellers in India and in Delhi in particular. The overall structure is logical, beginning with a consideration of slums in general (including history, causes, characteristics, etc), and Indian slums in particular. This is followed by a more detailed profile slums in Delhi and the lives of slum- dwellers, and an examination of the extent of violation of their human rights, measured by access to certain services and facilities (according to a survey carried out by the author). A more personal account is then offered of the perspective of slum residents, including their opinions about life in slum conditions. Finally, the ‘human rights conditions’ of respondents are considered – though this is measured solely by their awareness of the existence of certain rights in international law. This relates to a major weakness regarding the human rights aspect of this book, that is, the failure to consider human http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Asia-Pacific Journal on Human Rights and the Law Brill
