SCANDINAVIAN DOCUMENTS A/1948. Finnish-Russian Pact on Mutual Assistance concluded in Moscou on April 6th, 1948. Preamble: »The Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the U. S. S. R. and the President of the Finnish Republic, with the object of further promoting friendly relations between the U. S. S. R. and Finand: con- vinced that consolidation of good-neighbourly relations meets the vital interests of both countries; considering Finland's aspiration to stand aside from the contradictions of interests of the Great Powers; and expressing their unswerving aspiration to cooperate in the interests of the preservations of international peace and security in corformity with the aims and principles of the United Nations organisation; have decided to conclude for these ends the present Treaty. Art. 1. In the event of Finland or the Soviet Union, across the ter- ritory of Finland, becoming the object of military aggression on the part of Germany or any State allied to the latter, Finland, loyal to her duty as independent State, will fight to repulse the aggression. In doing so she will direct all the forces at her disposal to the defence of the inviolability of her territory on land, on sea, and in the air,
