Summary of the Discussion 137 Summary of the Discussion L.F. MARKENSTEIN University of Utrecht, The Netherlands 1. Introduction During the workshop there was a lively discussion on the various legal.and ethical aspects of the further use of human tissue I. This report summarizes the discussion by highlighting the main themes, questions and conclusions. 2. Dissemination of information to the public and patients It was generally agreed that there is a need for transparancy and openness about the further use of human tissue. This implies the dissemination of general information and the education of the public. Openness in these matters was seen as a basic requirement, to prevent the risk of further use gaining a bad reputation, even though it can serve very good purposes. In Denmark, for example, the existence of an unknown tissue bank containing brain tissue from schizofrenics caused a great deal of media attention and public concern. It was generally agreed that people are entitled to be informed, if only in the form of leaflets, that human tissues are being archived and/or used for other purposes. This also applies for material kept in a non-identifiable form, because the autonomy of the individual can be at stake even then.
