105 The French-Canadian Arbitration Around St. Pierre and Miquelon: Unmasked Opportunism and the Triumph of the U nexpected George P. Politakis Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva, Switzerland On 10 June 1992 a new chapter in the fast-growing jurisprudence in matters of maritime delimitation was concluded as a five-member arbitral tribunal handed down its award concerning the delimitation of the maritime areas around the North Atlantic islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon between Canada and France. In accordance with the compromis signed on 30 March 1989, the Court of Arbitra- tion was mandated to trace a single maritime boundary for the continental shelf and the exclusive economic zone areas appertaining to the two Parties. The delim- itation was to be effected from the two end points of a negotiated median line agreed upon in 1972 as establishing the territorial sea boundary in the channel area which separates the French islands from the south Newfoundland coast (Fig. 1). Little wonder that France argued for nothing less than a pure equidistant line which would have generated a vast maritime area of almost 50,000 km2 from an insular area of only 237 km2.
