This article reviews the background to the legislation, indicating the need for environmental measures and the extent to which the new law meets these needs. Background to the Island Protection Law Ecological Degradation of the Islands Scattered in the 3,000,000 square kilometres of waters over which China claims jurisdiction, are over 6,500 islands over 500 square meters
