International Law and the Structure of International Order: Von der Staatengesellschaft zur... In September 2005 a conference was held at Gießen, Germany, to bid farewell to Professor Heinhard Steiger on the occasion of his retirement from academia, a departure from active teaching, which did not coincide with the end of his scholarly work, since in 2010 he published an extensive historical study on the law of nations in Carolingian times. 1 The conference brought together a group of scholars working on the history of international law from the history and the law side of the field around the question of universality or continuity in international public law. Besides the achievement of the conference, with its proceedings published in 2011, 2 Heinhard Steiger has been honoured by the republication of a selection of his papers on the history of international law in a single volume within the Studien zur Geschichte des Völkerrechts series.
