Biographies 51 B i o g r a p h i e s Catherine Cissé a une double formation en droit international privé et public (Université de Paris I). A travaillé comme expert en matière de droits de l’homme pour de multiples organisations internationales. Travaille actuellement directement auprès du Procureur du Tribunal pénal international pour le Rwanda et du Tribunal pénal interna- tional pour l’ex-Yougoslavie, chargée en particulier de la coordination juridique entre le Tribunal pour l’ex-Yougoslavie et le Tribunal pour le Rwanda. Ellen Hey is Associate Professor of public international law at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam and Deputy Director of the GLODIS -Institute. She is Editor in Chief, together with Professor Jutta Brunneé, of the Yearbook of International Environmental Law and a member of the board of the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Internationaal Recht. Catherine Kessedjian est Professeur agrégé des Facultés de droit, en détachement de l’Université de Bourgogne auprès de la Conférence de La Haye de Droit international privé où elle occupe les fonctions de Secrétaire général adjoint. Depuis 17 ans elle enseigne le droit international privé, le contentieux privé international notamment l’arbitrage et les modes alternatifs de règlement des différends. Elle conseille les particuliers et les entre- prises pour leurs opérations internationales. Elle est arbitre au sein de plusieurs institu- tions et ad hoc. Elle participe à la rénovation des systèmes juridiques et judiciaires des pays en développement et nouvellement indépendants. Frances Meadows studied law at Cambridge and began her career as a solicitor in Lon- don in litigation, arbitration and international boundary disputes. She has practised extensively both in industry and in international institutions, having worked as adviser to successive Presidents of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal in The Hague, as General Counsel, Europe, for Tandem Computers, and most recently as First Secretary at the Inter- national Court of Justice. She is now based in Paris as Regional Counsel, Europe, Middle East and Africa for Verifone Incorporated. Bette E. Shifman is First Secretary at the International Court of Justice and former Deputy Secretary-General of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan and George Washington University Law School, and a former senior research associate at the Parker School of Foreign and Comparative Law at Columbia University Law School. She has also worked as a practicing attorney and is the author of publications in the fields of international business transactions and inter- national dispute resolution. Anne Veldkamp-Vallez studied public administration in the United States, interna- tional law in France and European law in Belgium.
