Book review: Present-Day Spiritualities. Contrasts and Overlaps , written by Hense, E., Jespers,... Present-Day Spiritualities. Contrasts and Overlaps . Leiden / Boston: Brill. (2014) isbn 978-90-04-26001-6. This volume that brings together the papers presented at a seminar held in the Radboud University Nijmegen in 2011, reflects the debate and the tentative conclusions arrived at with regard to present-day spiritualties. As underscored in the Introduction by Elisabeth Hense, the book attempts to shed some light on ‘spirituality’, “a vague and indistinct category” (p. 1), to contribute to a comprehensive conceptual framework without losing sight of its specific and diversified aspects. In other words, it aims at exploring a wide range of spiritual beliefs and practices taking also into account the family resemblances (Wittgenstein) among them. The Epilogue penned by the three editors suggests that such an objective has been reached to some extent, opening up avenues for further research. The contributions of ten experts are organized in two parts; the first focuses on the fields of research in spirituality, the second on the interdisciplinary approach to spirituality. Part one with seven chapters, presents researches in five areas of spirituality. In the area of spiritualities linked to religious tradition (chapter 1), Paul van der Velde deals with what is ‘spiritual’ in modern Western http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of Empirical Theology Brill
