The Routledge international handbook of religious education furnishes an introduction to religious education ( re ) in 53 countries and regions of the world, including a variety of religious cultures and predominant religions: Christianity (Roman Catholic, Protestant, Eastern Ortodox), Islam (Sunni and Shia), Hinduism, and Buddhism. The handbook covers 25 European, 13 Asian, 8 American and three African countries, plus Australia. There are also chapters that summarise re in the European Union, Asia and Latin America. The book includes overviews of historical and current situations in the national states, and their religious and educational landscapes. As a whole, it emphasises juridical aspects of state/religion/education relationships and the kind of impact that legal, political, historical and societal debates and decisions have had on religion in current school contexts. re features as the meeting point of a number of contradictory aspects, such as religious and cultural history, interpretations of freedom of/for/from religion; and challenges in finding constructive solutions that include national and collective interests as well as parental and individual choices in religious and educational issues.
