ISBN 978-3-03911-211-1 Th is book off ers an overview of the emerging economic paradigm in social theory of reli- gion, expressed in the metaphors of salvation goods and religious markets. Th e editor of the volume, professor of sociology of religion Jörg Stolz (Lausanne University), edited a volume with contributions by authors who visited an international conference on the topic, organ- ised by the Observatory of Religions in Switzerland (ORS), in 2005. Th e book critically assesses the use of goods and markets concepts in social theory of religion, not only in terms of the obvious rational choice theories advocated by American sociologists, but also in terms of the ‘European’ roots of the paradigm as developed earlier — and with at least the same sophistication — by Weber and Bourdieu. Th is is dealt with mainly in the fi rst, theo- retical part of the book.
