ISBN 978-3-429-02871-8 Th e book is the dissertation of the author, formerly a pastor at an academic hospital and currently responsible for Roman Catholic hospital chaplaincy in Hamburg diocese in Ger- many. As the title indicates, the study seeks to determine the identity of pastoral work in light of current developments in health care. Rather than a strictly empirical study in the scientific sense of the word, it provides an analysis in terms of sociology of health, followed by a pastoral-theological reflection. Th e first chapter presents an overview of the main trends in German health care. Th ese do not differ much from current trends in other European countries and in the USA. Health care is caught on a cleft stick between political pressure to control cost on the one hand, and an enormous escalation in public use of health care on the other.
