Reviewed by David Bundy Since the pioneering analysis of Latin American Pentecostalism by Christian Lalive d'Epinay, El refugio de las masas, Estudio sociologico del protestantismo chileno (Santiago de Chile: Editorial del Pacífico, 1967) based on his licentiate thesis at the University of Geneva (also 1967) and translated into English as Haven of the Masses ; A Study of the Pentecostal Movement in Chile (London: Lutherworth, 1969), there has been a tendency to interpret Latin American Pentecostalism as a bastian where the dispossessed withdrew from involvement with the world and ceased to confront the realities of life, protected by a veneer of ideology. During the past decade, a number of scholars, in both Latin America and Europe, have been looking again at the phenomenon of Pentecostalism in Latin America. They are finding something quite different from docile step-children of North American Pentecostalism where the case for social disengagement can more readily be made. This volume which suggests
