Book Review: Pentecostals, Proselytization, and Anti-Christian Violence in Contemporary India , written by Chad Bauman

Book Review: Pentecostals, Proselytization, and Anti-Christian Violence in Contemporary India ,... Chad Bauman, Pentecostals, Proselytization, and Anti-Christian Violence in Contemporary India , Global Pentecostalism and Charismatic Christianity (New York, NY : Oxford University Press, 2015). xiii + 208 pp. $24.95 paperback. Chad Bauman’s book has many strengths. I lift up four. One, his examination of the problematic nature of “transnational flows of Christian money” (21) particularly into institutions such as Gospel for Asia ( GFA ) is revealing. Given GFA ’s rhetoric against social work (169) and for reaching “souls” (169–170), Bauman’s analysis is highly pertinent to a discussion of the logic and practice of anti-Christian violence. Readers and analysts would do well to think about such matters, “including missionary methods and theology” (21). Two, the investigation of the problematic entanglements of caste among St. Thomas Christians (43–44) in particular and dominant-caste Christians in general is a point of strength in Bauman’s analysis. This gives force to his claim that the violence being discussed is more than merely an inter-religious dispute. Three, Bauman points out a significant element that merits wide attention: Pentecostal syncretism. He notes how, contrary to popular belief, Indian Pentecostals have much “in common with ordinary non-Christians” (104). The fourth strength, and perhaps the most important http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Pneuma Brill
